In the last 10 years there have been tremendous advances in Machine Learning models and applications. In this talk I will discuss some of these progresses, namely on Artificial Neural Networks and the so-called Deep Learning architecture. As we enter the age of big data, where vast amounts of (mainly unstructured) data is available for training, the achievements of these algorithms in fields such as voice recognition and translation, feature detection, image and video classification, fraud detection, risk management and recommendation systems is astonishing. Some cases will be presented and future directions pinpointed.
